Govt fully committed to fulfilling martyrs’ dreams: Home minister

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has said the government is fully committed to fulfilling the aspirations of those killed during last year’s Gen Z movement, particularly their demands for good governance and an end to corruption.

Addressing a programme organised by the Gen Z Martyrs’ Families Welfare Society at the former Federal Parliament building in New Baneshwor on Tuesday, Minister Gurung said the aspirations that drove young people to the streets would not go unanswered.

The event marked the first anniversary of the movement, which took place on September 8 and 9, 2025.

“Let the entire Gen Z generation be assured that good governance will be established and corruption will end in the country,” Gurung said.

“If another bullet has to be fired because our demands and dreams remain unfulfilled, let it be fired at my head,” he added.

Gurung urged young people to remain confident, saying Prime Minister Balendra Shah and Rastriya Swatantra Party President Rabi Lamichhane would ensure that the hopes of Gen Z youth did not fade.

He said he was making every possible effort to strengthen good governance and curb corruption in recognition of the trust placed in him by the public.

“As long as there is life in me, I assure you that I will not allow any Nepali to suffer,” he said.

Recalling last year’s uprising, Gurung said it was deeply unfortunate that young people raising their voices in a democratic country had been met with gunfire by the government of the time.

Also addressing the event, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam said the Gen Z movement had erupted amid growing public frustration, particularly after the previous government restricted social media platforms.

“The people were increasingly angry. We were fighting from inside Parliament. The single clear message of the Gen Z movement was the demand for good governance,” Gautam said, adding that young people who took to the streets with that demand had lost their lives to gunfire.

She said the ideas and aspirations of those killed in the movement would endure for generations.

Minister Gautam called for the events of September 8 and 9 to be viewed from different perspectives, saying the young people who took to the streets were demanding good governance rather than seeking to overthrow the government.

She also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the demands raised by Gen Z youth and highlighted efforts under way to put those commitments into action.

Lawmakers Som Sharma, Khagendra Sunar and Shiva Yadav, Society Chairperson Narayan Shrestha and Gen Z Nepal Chairperson Badal Rai were among those who called for collective efforts to fulfil the movement’s core demands for good governance and corruption control.
